A Wild Tree
I've driven past this tree for years. On an old winding mountain road. Not much traffic in this area.
For some reason I always wonder about it. Went does it have all these holes? Have branches fallen off it?
Finally I rode my bike up the hill to check it out. No answers.

Usually the lowest branches become very thick and large, because they are the oldest. Eventually they die and fall off because the wood here can no longer receive enough sunlight to make new leaves to regenerate the branch.
The bark on this tree is really interesting, because it hasn't finished healing over the wounds. So you end up with this crust in the bark surrounding the branch wounds. I am not sure why the holes are so deep. Maybe the cambium layer is a few inches below the bark.
Just like people, some of us carry wounds deeper than others.
Trees can tell us so much. Thanks for all your insight. It's cool to think they can last a thousand years and still show some life similarities to us. I love it.

It would be nice to know the genus and species of the tree. Maybe a picture of a leaf will help.
The bark appears oak"ish" but with character like this there is a whole lot more going on 'under the surface'. Definitely puts out a majestic vibe.
Even wildness is sometime cool too ;)
