River Murray ~ Red Gum Forest

in #photo6 years ago (edited)

Hi all,
Here's a couple of pics from my favourite camping spot. This is on the banks of the River Murray not far from a town called Yarrawonga.
The River Murray forms most of the border between the south eastern states of New South Wales and Victoria (1880km-1168mi) in Australia and is the longest single river on the continent. Yarrawonga is roughly a third of the way.

Some fun facts ~
2530km (1572mi) long
Part of the driest river system on Earth
3rd longest navigable river in the world.
Flows between Mt Kosciuszko (Aus highest peak) in the southern alps of NSW and meets the Southern Ocean at Goolva
in South Australia.
Home to Australias largest fresh water fish, the Murray Cos (up to 22kg (48lbs)
60 million yrs old (give or take!)

The River also hosts the worlds largest River Red Gum forest which stretches along its entire length. These here are only young trees. The forests were subject to heavy logging which has all but stopped now.

I love camping here all year round although I enjoy it most in the spring as the fishing is closed so there is no one there and the weather is perfect. You can sit and just be knowing you are the only humans for miles!
The fishing closes in this part of the river to allow uninterupted breeding of the native fish ~ Murray Cod, Yellow Belly (Golden Perch) and in particular, the endangered Trout Cod.

All of these pics are taken from the same vantage point, right where I pitch the tent! ~ The below is one the kids got of little ol' me and the smile I can't get off my face when we're there!
