In cold Iceland, a country of snow, ice and unique natural attractions, there is always something to see and admire. Its main riches are represented by powerful fjords, volcanoes, waterfalls and, of course, glaciers, impressive in their scale and beauty. In its entrails, as in the castle of the Queen of the Snows, there is something even more magnificent: ice caves. The most amazing are concentrated in the southern part of the gigantic glacier Vatnajokull, which is the largest in Europe and the third largest in the world after the glaciers of Antarctica and Greenland. Its area is 8133 km², which is 8% of the entire territory of the island. The thickness of the ice on average is 400 meters, and the maximum reaches 1000 meters. Vatnayokudl is a part of Europe's largest national park of the same name.
Majestic natural objects are formed in the southern part of the body of the giant ice for several thousand years. The process of icing caused by movement caves melt the flow of water that seeps into large hollow ice or into their intersection, and forms a century later under ice tunnels and passages, sometimes acceptable for humanos. Some of them arise due to the activity of underground geothermal sources: the hot water makes huge galleries under the glacier thickness relatively rapidly . The length of the ice tunnels can reach 300 meters, depth: 100 meters and more.
- As a result of prolonged melting and freezing processes, ice acquires the most unusual forms: giant wave fangs, ornate labyrinths and frozen galleries. Its rich shadow of the blue wall of ice formations also become in recent years: during the movement of the thickness of snow glacier displaces air bubbles out of it, then the mass of snow is transformed into ice crystals and makes it clearer. The best period to contemplate the delicious blue of ancient ice is the cold season, from December to March, when the lagoon freezes completely and the local views become quite safe. For lovers of extreme walks, the guides of the Vatnayöküld National Park regularly organize excursions to the bowels of the glacier, where you can see with your own eyes the focus of the Icelandic natural beauties.
