Circus Orange At Supercrawl

This weekend has been Supercrawl weekend in Hamilton, Ont. What is Supercrawl?

A driven team of Hamilton artists and community builders founded Supercrawl in 2009 out of a desire to expand on the promise of James Street North’s monthly Art Crawl. Showcasing great music alongside an entire street of cultural experiences — a diverse and dynamic lineup of music, art, fashion, performance, talks, crafts, food and fun (local, regional national and international) — the festival has captured the imagination of culture lovers far beyond the city.

I love the monthly art crawls, but typically stay away from the Supercrawl. The local artists and performers that can be found at the art crawls get replaced by vendors that pay exorbitant vendor permit fees and corporate vendors/sponsorships (TD bank, Royal Bank, Toyota, etc.). Personally I have no issue with the corporate world and free markets. But it does directly change not only the feel and "heart" of the event, but the people who attend it. Supercrawl is the normie version of the art crawls.

There is one event that draws me in every year though, Circus Orange.

At Circus Orange we have four feature length, touring spectacle shows. These productions follow in the tradition of grand-scale European street theatre and are designed for the outdoor festival environment. These spectacular shows take over entire city streets and public squares exploding into the sky above. Each of these productions tells a story and draws heavily on both pyrotechnics, custom rigging and dramatic theatrical elements to create a truly original production. The shows are site specific and usually take place in multiple areas, stages and even in processional form. These shows vary in length, content and complexity.
