Sometimes a photo manages to transmit much more than a thousand words, and if you have to fight with the best pictures in the world, the situation is even more intriguing.

I have always had a certain passion for photography, but I can never think of myself as more than an amateur. I have a few basic notions, sometimes "I catch my ears" with the camera in the editors that have as many buttons as a spacecraft, but I manage to capture what I want.

image

With the emergence of top-rated phones, the passion has expanded even further, especially as a smartphone with a good camera is more accessible than a camera that makes excellent pictures. And yet, no matter how good is a camera of phone, it still can not be compared to what a DSLR manages to take , let's say, in combination with an objective for the cadres you want to capture.

Yes, with a phone you can make nice pictures to show others, but you will not necessarily get to the level big . That's why you have to put your hand on a dedicated device, spend some time with it, and then find something interesting to photo.

If you find a good subject and you have talent, all you have to do is pack everything into a story to catch. And then you have the chance to be one of those who get on the panel of honor at the Sony World Photography Awards. I had the opportunity to going this year at the awards ceremony, and at first glance it was amazing compared to the technology events I attended.

The event has five categories in which photographers, whether professional or amateur, have the opportunity to sign up with various papers, hoping to win one of the great prizes. So, I had the opportunity to see Professionals, where you could admire sets of photos on a specific theme, for starters. This is the Open category, with 10 sub-categories for stand-alone images. This is where the National Awards category, where you can win for the best photo from a particular country. The Youth category is for young photographers aged between 12 and 19, and Student Focus for those studying the photo.

Naturally, in each of the categories I found at least one image or set of images to impress me. Inevitably, some of photo do not understand them so well or give you any sense of appreciation, that's art. But it does not make sense to focus on the photos I would have hoped for, but on those who managed to touch me more than I thought.

Some of the pictures that impressed me.

In search of some eye-catching imagery to boost morale surrounding US involvement in WWI, the US military commissioned the English-born photographer Arthur Mole and his assistant John Thomas to make a series of extraordinary group portraits. Between 1915 and 1921, with the dutiful help of thousands of servicemen and staff from various US military camps, the duo produced around thirty of the highly patriotic images, which Mole labelled “living photographs”.

The gun players are WH Murphy and his assistant, of the Protective Garment Corporation of New York. By 1923, the Protective Garment Corporation of New York manufactured a light weight vest for police use and they held a live demonstration in DC. The live demonstration took place at the Washington City police headquarters. They are inventors and salesmen trying to convince the police force that these bulletproof vests work and save lives.

Hawaiians used spears to fish in shallows or along rocky ledges, or underwater to catch rock fishes. Hard woods like kauila, oa, koaie, and uhiuhi were favored for spears. Finished spears were six or seven feet long, slim and sharply pointed at one end. Night spear fishing inside the reef was done by the light of kukui-nut torches as the bright light attracted fish in shallow waters.Fishermen made torches out of kukui nuts wrapped in leaves on top of a pole. The lamaku was a large torch made out of a short piece of the coconut leaf midrib. On the midrib, they would string kukui kernels to make the torch. If the Hawaiians wanted a brighter light they put roasted kukui nuts in a hollow piece of bamboo and lit them.

At the event, I had the opportunity to listen to the photographers, while watching a screen preview of the images they had won. When Edgar Martins' turn came, I saw some black-and-white images with minimalist shapes, and I could only ask myself, like a profane, what the hell is this and why they won the pictures. Martins won the category of still life, with a set of pictures to the category name. Siloquies And Soliloquies On Death, Life And Other Interludes is the photographic project I'm show you about it.

Another nice set was created by Alys Tomlinson, who also won the title of photographer of the year at the Sony World Photography Awards 2018 and whose pictures can be seen here: https://www.worldphoto.org/sony-world-photography-awards/winners-galleries/2018/professional/winners/discovery/1st-place-ex .I could not help remarking the winner from the category of portraits to professionals; Tom Oldham was able to surprise the Palm Tree's "last of the crowners" jazz singers in an authentic way. Indeed, I'm not a very big fan of portraits, maybe because I do not know about them, but these pictures have something.

The best photograph produced by a Romanian belongs to Nicu Spinu, with the photo "The Boot", which you can see below.

Overall, the Sony World Photography Awards is a great event to get to him, especially because you have the opportunity to see the people behind the lens closely. Even if you do not get that far, it is still worth enjoying their pictures.

Great article. Keep up with the good work. Those photos are amazing.

What kind of camera do you prefer? A small camera, easy to carry around... Or something larger, better but not as practical for traveling with?
