Sequence 5 - 28 November 2018

Following on from my last post about this beautiful flower from the Aloe Duckeri plant, this article contains some general information about the plant in addition to the next photos in the sequence.

First thing this morning, I spotted a feathered visitor enjoying some breakfast in the bigger patch of Aloe plants although you'll have to forgive me for not taking any photographs. The reason for that is because it happened before I'd even made my first coffee for the morning and if you're a coffee lover, like me, you would know that NOTHING HAPPENS in my day until I've finished at least one coffee.

Hopefully, our visitor lives close by and gives me another chance to capture that shot.

Last week we saw another decent rainfall, giving the ground a really good soaking with some much-needed moisture. The Aloe responded with a little growth spurt and the individual flowers have now spread a little further out from the centre, the (coral) colour of the petals also appears more vibrant.

After seeing such a significant difference from yesterday, I think the changes will occur in much shorter intervals so I need to be vigilant to be sure I capture every stage.

General Information

Aloe Duckeri is an evergreen, succulent, perennial plant forming a dense rosette of leaves up to 1 metre in diameter. The plant often suckers to form a small group of plants; it can be stemless or, especially in older plants, can form short, thick stems up to 30cm tall.

Propagation

When grown from seed (in general) Aloes are sown in a sandy, well-drained potting soil in a warm, shady position in standard seed trays. Germination takes about three weeks. Cover the seed with a thin layer of sand (1 - 2mm), keep moist. The seedlings can be planted out in individual bags or containers as soon as they are large enough to handle.
