Diffraction is literally broken, fractured, enveloping obstacles with waves. You probably noticed that when photographing from point-like luminous objects, rays emanate. An interesting fact is that the number of rays depends on the number of petals of the aperture of the photographic lens.

If the number of petals of the diaphragm is even, the number of rays will be equal to the number of these petals.

In the case where the number of petals is odd, the number of rays is equal to the double number of petals.
