Three Shots Captured With A Couple Of Different Vintage Lenses.

in #photography6 years ago (edited)

And here I am again, spreading my love for vintage manual lenses.

Some people like to state that flower pictures are boring. Of course they have all the right to thing so, but that's what it is, an opinion and nothing more than that.
And my own opinion is that these old lenses bokeh really shines a lot more on any type of nature photography, specially flowers, than in street or any other type.
But hey, again, that's only my opinion.

The following three images were shot with 2 different lenses. The first two were shot with a Russian Helios 44-2. A copy of the famous Carl Zeiss Biotar.
After the WWII the Russians got the original building plans and even original Zeiss glass from the defeated Germany and started to copy some models. One of them was this one".

In this first image I captured few Oxalis blossoms, and the red dots blured by the bokeh on the background are flowers from a kalanchoe bush.

Here, still with my trusty Helios, I shot few Anemone flowers from my balcony.
Look at the creaminess of this bokeh, almost making it look like a painting.
There's almost zero post production on any of these shots. Just a slight contrast adjustment.
To achieve this bokeh and sharpness quality with a modern lens you will need to spend over 1000 Euros on it. While this Russian beauty cost me around 50 Euros, fully serviced, as new!

This last one is a completely different "animal"
Here I used a Pentacon 50mm 1.8 made in the old Eastern Germany.
They were originally produced under the well known Meyer Optik Goerlitz's name, a brand that at some point was bought by Pentacon. They kept producing the best models, introducing few improvements to some lenses, like different coatings that help to reduce the lens flare in brighter conditions, or shooting the sun directly for example.

The subject here was the same as in my first image in this post. A couple of Oxalis flowers in focus, and lots of them blurred by the bokeh on the background.

Thank you :)

Wow, I had not realized the bokeh of an analog camera could be so different to that of a digital camera. Indeed it goes very well with flowers, it's beautiful.

Thanks a lot for stopping by, @a0i!
I'm afraid you misread something. The lenses are vintage but all these images were shot with a full frame Sony a7 body. A mirrorless camera but digital :)

Indeed, not sure how I missed that, head is slow today...
In any case, wonderful bokeh!

Sour grass! lol, we used to chew the stems on those when we were kids and laugh about how sour it is. Your post has really made me miss all my old gear. And yes the bokeh is fantastic most young people don't know about that with older glass

Exactly what we call it here and also what I used to do whan I was a kid. Sour grass :D
I started to really love these old lenses. A lot cheaper than the contemporany ones and with so much more character.

I wonder if kids still do that?

Those prices are fantastic. Your Sony is an E mount? The vintage lenses mount with an adapter right? Do you use the same adapter for all the old glass? I have an Alpha mount Sony. It's broken right now and out of warranty so i'm stuck with just my iPhone.

These shots bring different feelings to me. (Sorry, I don't know about lenses.) Shot1 brings joy, shot 2 hope and shot 3 brings isolation.
Flower photos are not boring for me.

No everyone has to know about lenses, @deemarshall.
Those feelings and interpretations from the viewer it's what really matters. The used gear is just a way to get there.

Okay, that's good then :)
