Wet Bison on the Prairie (Original Photography)

Howdy,

The morning started off gray and got darker. Mid morning found me running from the door of a cafe to my truck in a moderate shower which, eventually, became a torrent. It's been awhile since I've seen the bison, though, and I thought a little rain might make for some interesting atmospheric ambiance.

The bison looked to be a little under the weather, both figuratively and literally. The water running down their coats and faces created some nice texture, though, and the dense clouds created a beautiful diffused light to work with. I would have liked to put the ultra-wide lens on, but it's not weather sealed and the rain, though it had let up a little, was still falling.

Coming across the bison along the road isn't, by any means, a certain thing. Their enclosure is quite large and they often graze, unseen, in the vast, grassy expanse. Today, though, they were crossing as I got to their location.

The little ones are growing up pretty fast! Gone are the sandy coats and the beginnings of their horns are peeking through the fur on their heads. This cute little one was still using a wide stance and posing for the camera.

The DNR has been doing some sort of work in the bison enclosure, though I'm not certain what. They have been removing invasive plant species (evil buckthorn!), but this seems to be a different type of project.
