Photo challenge contest Australia continent Monday - Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

This is my submission for the contest 7 World’s Continents Photo Challenge - Australian Monday organised by @czechglobalhosts. To put a little bit of context, this is Papua New Guinea more exactly a remote island called New Ireland. This place is so remote that at the time we went there weren't many roads. In fact, there was only one that went to just half of the island. Then if you want to explore, the only way is walking. Thus, most of the young kids have never seen white people or people with straight hair. It's an unforgettable experience, as my wife calls it a Indiana Jones Style holiday.

I can only select one picture for the contest, but I'd like to share some other pics from this trip so that you can sense the context of this place.

New Ireland is a place that seems to be frozen in time. They don't have roads or electricity; every little town is a different culture where they might speak different dialects. It's a simple a relaxed way of life, where children enjoy every minute.

I love the skin and hair colour of the PNG people. They are unique, they have dark skin, but their hair colour is natural blond or orange. All of them have curly hair, and they can have a cool style like the fella in this picture.

Talking about not seeing white people. Indeed, we manage to make cry lot of babies, especially Nikki because her eyes were weird/scary/never-seen blue. There she is surrounded by youngsters who have never seen a white person in their lives. Besides, they were quite shocked with her straight hair. Most of them just wanted to touch her hair as it can be appreciated here.

This is me with one of my most valuable possessions. The person next to me is called Ben Sisia, and he is one of the last of the old-time Malagan (local tribe) carvers. Meaning, he carves totems and masks following the Malagan tradition of the Nalik area. This mask is one last made in the traditional way that is used in rituals and dances. According to their tradition, this kind of trade can only be passed from father to son. At the time his son didn't want to learn, but recently I read a blog where said that now he's being trained by his father. It is an honor have a piece of art and culture from civilisation from one of the last traditional carvers.

Finally, these are some pictures from a Sing-Sing. Which is a battle dance style step-up or tribal version of high school musical (Don't judge me, I haven't seen the movie, but I know is about dancing). They use ass-grass and local plants to create intricate patterns and hats. In other areas, of PNG they use feathers from birds of paradise.
