This small Greek island touched my heart. Spinalonga is located in the bay of Elounda, also called Mirabello Bay, on Crete in Greece was an emotional highlight for me.

Diese kleine griechische Insel hat mein Herz berührt. Spinalonga liegt in der Bucht von Elounda, auch Mirabello Bucht genannt, auf Kreta in Griechenland war für mich ein emotionaler Höhepunkt.

The island has a very changeable history. Due to its strategic location, it was already fortified in antiquity. In the 16th century, the Venzians built a massive fortress with mighty cannons to protect the bay of Elounda and the harbor because of the Turkish threat. In fact, the fortress was never taken. Even after the Ottomans had occupied Crete in 1699, Spinalonga still remained in the possession of the Venetians and was only handed over voluntarily to the Turks in 1714. These used the fortress until the 19th century to protect the bay and it settled artisans and sailors within the fortress walls.
After the Ottomans left Crete at the end of the 19th century because of Christian rebellions, the Cretan government decided in 1903 to use the island for the isolation of lepers.

From then on Spinalonga was a place of martyrdom. The patients did not only suffer from their leprosy illness but also had to endure the separation of family and friends. Even children were separated from their parents.

Die Insel hat eine sehr wechselhafte Geschichte. Durch ihre strategische Lage wurde sie schon in der Antike befestigt. Im 16. Jahrhundert errichteten die Venzianer wegen der türkischen Bedrohung eine massive Festung mit gewaltigen Kanonen zum Schutz der Bucht von Elounda und dem Hafen. Tatsächlich wurde die Festung auch nie eingenommen. Auch nachdem die Osmanen 1699 ganz Kreta besetzt hatten, blieb Spinalonga immer noch im Besitz der Venezianer und wurde erst 1714 freiwillig an die Türken übergeben. Diese nutzten die Festung bis ins 19. Jahrhundert zum Schutz der Bucht und es siedelten sich Handwerker und Seeleute innerhalb der Festungsmauern an.
Nachdem die Osmanen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts aufgrund christlicher Rebellionen Kreta verließen, beschloss die kretische Regierung 1903 die Insel zur Isolation von Leprakranken zu nutzen.

Ab da war Spinalonga ein Ort des Martyriums. Die Patieten litten nicht nur unter ihrer Lepra Erkrankung sondern mussten auch die Trennung von Familie und Freunden ertragen.
Selbst Kinder wurden von ihren Eltern getrennt.

Through this gate, one enters then as today the island. At that time, however, it was a goal of no return. Whoever walked through this gate knew that he would never leave the island again.

Durch dieses Tor betritt man damals wie heute die Insel. Damals war es jedoch ein Tor ohne Wiederkehr. Wer durch dieses Tor schritt wusste, dass er die Insel nie wieder verlassen würde.

Gradually, the sick began to organize on the island and renovated the existing buildings. There were shops and taverns and they even built 2 churches. There were barbers, cafes and a theater. Trees were planted and classical music played on loudspeakers in the streets. There were even, though forbidden, weddings instead.

Nach und nach begannen die Kranken sich auf der Insel zu organisieren und renovierten die vorhandenen Gebäude. Es entstanden Geschäfte und Tavernen und man baute sogar 2 Kirchen. Es gab Barbiere, Cafes und ein Theater. Es wurden Bäume gepflanzt und klassische Musik über Lautsprecher auf den Straßen gespielt. Es fanden sogar, obwohl verboten, Hochzeiten statt.

A driving force in the development of a certain infrastructure on the island was the 21-year-old law student Epameinondas Remoundakis, who fell ill in 1936 with leprosy and was banished to the island. He survived but lost an arm and his eyesight due to the illness. His little sister who also came to Spinalonga, however, died on the island. He is the author of the following poem.

Eine treibende Kraft bei der Entwicklung einer gewissen Infrastruktur auf der Insel war der 21-jährige Jurastudent Epameinondas Remoundakis, der im Jahre 1936 an Lepra erkrankte und auf die Insel verbannt wurde. Er überlebte, verlor aber durch die Krankheit einen Arm und sein Augenlicht. Seine kleine Schwester die ebenfalls nach Spinalonga kam, starb allerdings auf der Insel. Er ist der Verfasser des folgenden Gedichts.

“As you walk around Spinalonga, stop and hold your breath. From some hovel nearby you will hear the echo of a mother’s or sister’s lament or a man’s sigh. Shed a couple of tears from your eyes and you will see the sparkle of the millions of tears that have drenched this road.” - Epameinondas Remoundakis

Wenn du auf Spinalonga herumläufst, halte einen Moment den Atem an. Aus einer der verfallenen Hütten in der Nähe hörst du noch das klagende Lied einer Mutter, oder Schwester, oder den schmerzerfüllten Seufzer eines Mannes. Lass zwei Tränen aus deinen Augen rinnen und du wirst das Funkeln der Millionen von Tränen sehen, die diese Straße durchnässt haben. - Epameinondas Remoundakis

In 1948, American scientists developed a drug for leprosy, and in 1957, the last 20 patients were transferred from Spinalonga to a hospital in Athens.

Im Jahre 1948 entwickelten amerikanische Wissenschaftler ein Medikament gegen Lepra und 1957 wurden die letzten verbliebenen 20 Patienten von Spinalonga in ein Athener Krankenhaus verlegt.
