From Volterra to Siena

For this fifth appointment with Roads we start from Volterra to get to Siena. We are talking about fantastic roads and landscapes and wonderful cities to visit. From Volterra we head towards San Gimignano 1, one of the most interesting and historically rich villages in Tuscany.

San Gimignano deserves a long and accurate visit because it is a real gem set in the middle of Tuscany. In addition to the three squares, Piazza Duomo, Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza delle Erbe, every single street offers interesting and evocative views.

The things to see are many and scattered throughout the historic center, surrounded by walls. The walls themselves are a very interesting itinerary like the many other little squares and churches besides the Duomo, of course.

Left reluctantly San Gimignano we move in the direction of Poggibonsi 2. This is certainly not a place at the level of San Gimignano, but worth a visit. In particular, La Rocca di Staggia 3 is worth a visit, near Poggibonsi.

A short distance, in the direction of Siena, we find Castiglion Ghinibaldi 4, a castle of medieval origins in the municipality of Monteriggioni. This is not the biggest attraction but a short stop deserves it anyway.

Immediately after we arrive in Monteriggioni 5 a village surrounded by fortifications, a walled enclosure with two entrance doors and a large number of towers. The city dominates the surrounding area and was built by the Sienese as a "watchtower" for the entire area.

From Monteriggioni we finally arrive in Siena 6. On Siena one could, of course, write a novel, there are many things to see. Being a much larger city than San Gimignano, to me personally, has made less effect, a little gem, with everything concentrated in a very little space like San Gimignano, affects much more than the big city.

The fact remains that, starting from the famous Piazza del Campo, where the Palios run, to the Duomo, the public palace, still today the town hall, there is no shortage of things to see even in the small nucleus of the city.

To enjoy Siena, however, you need to arm yourself with patience and good shoes and wander through the streets, admire the buildings, the views, the squares, the widening, otherwise you do not enter the medieval spirit that still surrounds it.

Today's route takes place along really beautiful roads, rich in gentle curves through hills and valleys; as the seasons change, even if you follow the same roads, you can always enjoy different landscapes, especially with the colors of spring and autumn: to be done at least twice a year!

See you at the next episode ...
