Durante siglos, fueron elemento expresivo de la Cristiandad. Y aunque generalmente reproducían una planta con forma de cruz, el elemento de la Pasión, en su ejecución, los canteros medievales tenían en cuenta numerosos factores, como la orientación en base a la onomástica del santo al que estuvieran consagrados.

Muchos de ellos, notablemente afectados y malamente reformados, en algunos casos, siguen prestando sus servicios, sobre todo en las pequeñas comunidades rurales.

Pero además, constituyen un novísimo motivo de explotación, atrayendo a un numeroso grupo de personas, que ven en ellos un atractivo legado del pasado, digno de disfrute y estudio, constituyendo lo que podría denominarse como turismo cultural.

For centuries, they were an expressive element of Christianity. And although they generally reproduced a plant in the shape of a cross, the element of the Passion, in its execution, the medieval stonemasons took into account numerous factors, such as the orientation based on the onomastics of the saint to whom they were consecrated.

Many of them, notably affected and badly reformed, in some cases, continue to provide their services, especially in small rural communities.

But in addition, they constitute a new motive for exploitation, attracting a large group of people, who see in them an attractive legacy of the past, worthy of enjoyment and study, constituting what could be called cultural tourism.
