Washington Travels: La Push and the Washington Peninsula

Hi Steemians! So @mickeybeaves posted some beautiful pictures from their time at La Push, and I though I should share my experience as well! I had an older phone at the time, so the pictures are not nearly as beautiful as Mickey’s but I hope you enjoy them anyways.

A girlfriend goes to La Push almost every year, and she invited me to come along with her and her sons. We drove from Spokane and made it to Seattle and decided to stay there for the evening. We didn’t want to miss any of the beautiful views by driving in the dark. So, we played around in a dog park (with my girlfriends dogs) and watched the sun go down from the shore. The Pugent sound is a pretty beautiful and interesting place. You can find great spots to sit by the water and enjoy a meal while watching all the ships go by.

The next morning we headed out and took a ferry across the Sound to access the peninsula. I really thought the map inside the ferry was such a cool addition. I just really enjoy maps anyways, but tracing all the shipping and ferry channels was pretty neat.

We stopped at the Olympic Game Farm in Sequim on the way to La Push. Originally, the game farm was used to house animal actors for Disney. The bears will still sit up and wave to cars as they drive by. They have a huge variety of animals to see, and you are even allowed to feed them in certain areas!

Driving on, we found a waterfall to go check out! There are A LOT of waterfalls in this area. This one is just a few dozen yards from the parking area, very accessible. Unfortunately I don’t remember the name of this one, so you will just have to go exploring! The river ran along side of the parking area and the water was so crisp and cold! I just love the views in Washington, it’s so pretty here.

After a stunningly beautiful drive, we arrived at our cabin just off of the beach. We went in March when the area isn’t as jammed with tourists. The prices are much cheaper to rent a cabin if you go anytime between October and March. After that, the summer rates kick in and its much more expensive, plus much more crowded! There were folks occupying some of the other cabins, but we had plenty of room to almost feel like we had a private beach.

The majestic sea stacks greeted us every morning, and spotting plumes of water from the whales playing in the bay added excitement to our explorations.

My friend wanted to take me to see a lighthouse at Cape Flattery, just north of where we were staying. It is the “ northwestern most lighthouse on the West Coast of the contiguous United States” and sits on a tiny island at the entrance to the Straigh of San Juan de Fuca.

The lighthouse is cool, but the walk to the lighthouse is just stunning!

On the drive back we found another waterfall. I was lucky that I happened to be staring out the window and caught a glimpse of it. The boys are a little shorter than me, so they wouldn’t have been able to see over the guard rail. But I called it out and we stopped off to explore the area a little bit. It’s wasn’t the most accessible to the bottom, we had to climb down a pretty steep embankment. But, it was literally on the side of the road.

A couple more days of exploring and building fires on the beaches made for a really fun and relaxing vacation. I loved walking the beaches and trying to create stuff with rocks and drift wood.

I loved the old grandfather tree that had been washed up on the shore. I am just over 6 ft. tall so you can see just how big that tree is! The storms on the peninsula must get very strong to wash such a giant tree up on the beach.

I caught a picture of a bird perched on top of the old tree. I edited the coloring, as you can probably tell, but I love how the coloring enhances the drama of the root system and the discoloration from the waves at high tide.
