📸Taking DTube Outdoors for some Wildlife Photography 📸

in #photography6 years ago

Well I shot something eventually

My mission to take Steemit and DTube outdoors today took me to Braeside Park which is north east of my home. It's a large open space of mostly undisturbed land and is quite popular with wildlife photographers. And photographing wildlife was the mission for today.

I've never been to this location before which meant that I didn't expect to take many photographs, if any. This is for one simple reason:

  • You need to be either very familiar with the species you're hunting or very familiar with the location when expecting to take a great photo.

You need to understand how the species you're hunting will behave and it pays very large dividends to know where these species frequent when hunting them, hence knowing your location well.

And to make matters even more challenging today, the cloud cover was incredibly thick which really dampened the light. I don't like photographing in low light since it forces me to raise my ISO setting to uncomfortably high levels, which leads to grainy photographs and a slow shutter speed given that I tend to photograph in Aperture Priority.

At the end of the day I only managed to take a couple of half decent photographs of a Kookaburra. They're definitely nothing I'll be raving about but I do like these entertaining creatures.

So rather than focus too much on these photos here's one that I'm quite fond of that I took quite some time ago.

I'll definitely head back to Braeside Park again though. There are some species of bird here that are well worth hunting for. Hopefully I'll be able to bring you some much better photos in the near future!

Leave a link to your favourite own photos (that you've taken) in the comments below. I'd love to check them out.

News from dropahead: How to give back to the dropahead Project in 15 seconds or less

Awesome pics, dtube lags terribly on my phone so I was unable to watch the video.

The kookaburra made me think of when I was a young kid, I was eating a meat pie at Griffith University, and a kookaburra swooped down and snatched the pie straight out of my hands. Funny now, but I think I burst out crying at the time lol.

Lol. I saw one steal a sausage right off a BBQ once. It was hilarious.

What is the bird of the last photo?
Wow. Just speechless.
And I love the contract of the blue and the white. Cool portrait.

Thanks! It's a Little Egret. I spent about 4 hours photographing him. I have a couple of portraits of him actually. The one below was entered into a competition. I didn't win but it's still one of my favourite photos.

Too good, quite enjoy bush walking and spotting native animals. Do you live in Vic?

Yeah dude, in Mordialloc. You're west of the CBD aren't you?

Yeah Deer Park for now, building in Plumpton but land doesn't title until 2019.

Quite nice out that way.

Yeah I love it down this way. It's like living in a country town. everyone knows each other.

The kookaburra may be common there, but I am entertained by the one picture you posted. It seems to be waiting for you to look away so it can get back to creating mischief. I'm going to order one on Amazon! :-)) Thanks.

They do have a lot of character. He'd jump to the ground, grab something, eat it, then jump back to his perch. He did this about 4 times while I sat there. He didn't care at all that I was sitting only about 3 metres from him.

A multi-talented man, you are, @mazzle!

Thanks Jeff. :)
