Fantastic photos! I grew up on a small Midwestern town where Memorial Day was not only about Veterans, but about remembering all the graves of people we knew who were buried in the cemetery. As a kid I can remember walking through the cemetery with a flat of geraniums and a spade and planting them on graves, so that each grave was decorated for Decoration Day.
True! It came to be known as Decoration Day first, however, in 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day.
