I think you've got it all wrong. It is a friends circle which they - your actual friends on steemit - log into steem auto and follow a pre-agreed trail which one of you made and/or want to follow. Then and only then this user who created the trail needs to add you also to the fan base of the trail or else you'll only give a vote and not receive.
And next time spend a few more minutes to read the "about"section in services you don't know their uses.
