Horned Animals at the Lion County Safari in Florida

in #photography5 years ago

As promised, here is my next collection of animal photos from the Lion County Safari in Loxahatchee Florida. All photographs were taken with my trusty Canon 7D and Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L lens.

That telephoto lens is absolutely fantastic for this type of photography. I was amazed at the detailed mages that I could get of some creatures that were surprisingly far away.

There is quite a variety of horned animals roaming throughout the preserve. I don't know exactly how much land there is, but it seems like many squares miles. Just about anywhere you go in the park there are these 4 legged beasts hanging out keeping the weeds in check.

One thing that impressed me, being a guy who spends most of his time in urban areas, was seeing the vast variety of horn shapes that nature produces.

I think that these twisted looking horns were my favorite. Although I can imagine a could of these critters getting into a battle and getting their horns seriously locked together. That could turn into a bloody mess pretty quickly!

Then you have these characters with the long straight horns. I'd sure hate to get stabbed by those bad boys! Luckily, the animals seemed quite chill and content to wander around grazing. I wouldn't want to get them angry, though!

The last ones have the most unique horns in my opinion. I found myself wondering what the purpose is of the various shapes. Obviously, they all evolve their own particular shapes for reasons specific to their species. It would be amazing to be able to look back through history and see the environmental causes for these deviations as they occur.

I still have a few more animals left to show off, so check back soon, and thanks for looking!

When we where kids we had sheep that had curly horns and we used to ride them. I wonder if they will let you on their back. giddy up:)

I'd probably crush them with my weight. haha.

I love these, I am obsessed with horns and collect them. The variety of horn type and style in the animal kingdom is mind blowing. So many variations.

Yes, the designs are quite beautiful!

They are gorgeous and very horny... :-)

Hehe. Indeed.
