Dark Finger in the Fog... with "Passengers"

in #photography5 years ago

This morning, I was running some errands in town, and noticed the fog still hanging over the bay after a night's rain.

As I passed by the ferry terminal, I was struck by the way this solitary bollard (it's about 15-20 feet tall) with its maritime signal light seemed like a dark finger protruding from the water, looking somewhat ghostly against the fog.

In black-and-white, it takes on an even more stark and menacing appearance; almost feels like we should expect some kind of sea monster, next:

The cormorants sitting at the top are interesting and unusual birds. Unlike seagulls and ducks who float effortlessly around, cormorants' feathers get quite wet and soaked through, so they have to regularly take breaks and dry their wings, or they would not be able to fly, at all.

On sunny days, you'll often see them sitting with their wings spread, drying out.

Might seem like "unfortunate design," but the upside is that they are amazing underwater swimmers, almost like underwater "fishing missiles."
