A better shot than expected

in #photography5 years ago

Last week I bought a Huawei P30 Pro phone and while I aimed to get one with a decent camera, I am disappointed with the results as, it really is good and "too good" for a phone camera. While the software does most of the work, the camera lens is sharp and handles low-light conditions surprisingly well.

These were taken today on our excursion to Moomin World with @smallsteps and I tried a few of the auto settings for portraits and the like. As you will see, the in-unit processing is quite heavy-handed, but for those who love posting images to social medias like Appics or Instagram, it suits the use case.

@smallsteps clowning around.

She was also too scared to hug the Moomins as they were so large. She did give a big hug to Little My though.

She also tried fairy floss/ cotton candy for the first time and, didn't like it. "Too sweet."

You can see the heavy blur that gives the impression of a shallow DoF but far too much is clear. This is a nice effect for some images though.

Moomin World is on an island and this is taken from the bridge over.

And this is what I asked my wife to take as I was driving at 100km/h. Not too bad considering the speed.

And at a rest stop as the sun was setting behind.

These last ones are quit impressive as they were taken with the sun behind and an umbrella over the top that meant there wasn't a lot of ambient light to illuminate the faces yet, these are sharp and clear - even with @smallsteps moving all the time.

Even with the software aid, I am pretty surprised at how good the camera is on this phone and glad I got it as I won't feel as bad if I don't have my Olympus on me.

Phone cameras will unlikely ever replace a real camera, but with so many only using phones these days, the improvement in the technology should at least eventually mean fewer shit quality images in trending. But, a few free downvotes are likely going to arrive before people upgrade their phones.

I will go through the images on my camera later and I already feel that I should have put more effort into taking them as, these ones are so good. No matter the camera though, good photography is an art that many don't have the eye for. It can. Be learned of course, but most these days spend their study time working on their "selfie face".

I wish I had practiced posing for photos more as perhaps the someone would take a photo of me. =P

Amazing how I have not owned a camera in years because of this. It seems that it will only get better!

Yep, it surprised me how good it actually is. I like "real" photography though and there are plenty of limitations that are unlikely to be overcome - like long exposure and night shots, as well as fast motion.

When it works, it works. This one obviously has good depth in the picture so in those conditions nothing more to be desired. Speaking from a practical perspective.

The main difference between those and "Pro cams" is the latter do well in poor conditions, too. The worse the conditions, the more powerful camera we need.

That aside, my smartphone cam is terribly terrible in all conditions, but that's because I use an old and cheap model.

Good luck and have fun with your photos and family time :)

Yep, and the phones will take a very long time to close many of these gaps.

I think my last was too.
At the end of the day, it is nice to be able to quickly capture a photo at lunch without having to require a 2kg rig :D

Especially when it comes to mechanics and not only electronics. But size gets smaller all the time, in the camera field, included. And the mirrorless class of cams already do quite well compared to DSLR... and they weigh about 0.2 kg. But it's also about policy and market conditions. Some space level technologies are not worth it implementing in consumer goods as smartphones yet, while they're still too expensive. And some have been there since the beginning, of course.

I have had a mirrorless (olympus EM-1) for about 5 years now and have been really happy with it. The glass is still pretty heavy in my pro lens but more manageable than what I had for Canon. Carry on now includes more than just camera :)

Been a while since any of my shit photos have hit trending, but I'm ok with that.

Your images are plenty good enough from that phone, but I have a feeling you'll still resort to the actual camera often enough.

I uploaded straight into Steemitimages so they are crushed down, but thy are decent quality.

Don't worry, the good times will come again. Or you can get your shit photos to trend on the tribes ;D

Well we do need to save room...... :/

Shit photos on the tribes has been happening but nothing on dporn as yet though :D

I haven't had a look at dPorn yet, anything worthwhile to raise the flag pole? ;D

Terrible to be honest. @eveuncovered, sort it out :P

Perhaps I should get on there and show my D

-centralized thinking.

Another camera could spell double the opportunity...

This phone has 4 cameras in it I think and some "3-D" settings I haven't tried yet

3-D ... perfect for dPorn

I wasn’t going to but dear lord dporn needs some help, that shit is disgusting. I’ve been super inspired by Playboy’s Instagram page recently so maybe I need to get to working on something 😂😅

Lovely pics now and then of your wife and the little one. Isn't it high time for a family pic?
Anyway, nice pics.

Someone has to be ugly in every family, I won the prize! :D

Would be nice to get a good shot of us, perhaps on the weekend as it is the bubs birthday.
