The Oldest Frame Shop in The World...?

in #photography6 years ago (edited)

This is the door of the Fábrica de Molduras “Santos & Irmãos” (Factory of Frames "Santos & Brothers), located in the area of Bolhão, Porto.

They claim to be the oldest Frames Shop in the World.

A strong claim, one that couldn't be verified.

The first Frames Shop in the city of Porto was founded in 1858 by two brothers, António and José dos Santos.

They have been awarded the Bronze Medal at the Universal Paris Exhibition in 1900, and the Gold Medal at the Portuguese Industrial Exhibition in 1933.

I have found the following photo online, so you can see how this store looked like, before the Graffiti intervention.

Quite a difference, eh?

That a really cool street art:)

Yes, it's rather cool! Thanks for your comment! :-)

Hmm, you mean before the invention of the graffiti?

Not invention, intervention. I mean, before this door was painted! :-D

Cute intervention... That is a very charming building. Loving the details on the edge of the roof and the "dragon-scale" like tiles. Thank you for sharing.

I'm glad you've liked it!

that is quite a difference @trincowski. It looks like an interesting building all together. I wonder if it stood on it's own initially or whether it was squeezed into the space between the buildings either side. 😊

Thanks a lot, Gillian!

That's an interesting question. Anything is possible. This city was pretty much built on improvisation... and this house was already here over 150 years ago. Who knows how it started?

Maybe the city hall has kept records but I don't really know.
