Lighting in Photography

Lighting for a photo can set the mood and completely change the entire meaning and atmosphere of the photo.
Lighting plays such a key role!
Today I will be showing lighting from different angles with different poses.

Above

First, lighting from above.
I really love this one because it give a sort of "halo effect"
Here she is soft and angelic.

Front

This photo was lit from the front and is personally one of my favorites. I enjoy the way she pulls on the waves of her hair with an unchanged expression. It seems so natural and effortless. It's a beautiful photo of her.

Under

The first model is lit from under high lighting her natural contours, and shading her natural high points to created an interesting effect. It draws you in more because this is not the normal way of seeing. This is not how light tends to naturally fall and reflect off one's face. Here, there is a whole new perspective.

Side

Lit from the side, she stares intently, straight into the camera. She is not shy and gives direct eye-contact. It sends the presence of her strength and power.

Rembrandt Triangle

This is an an example of creating a Rembrandt Triangle using only one light.
Look closely, this is often a technique used by many photographers.
The right Cheek is lit with a triangle of light.
It creates visual interest and is very pleasing to look at. the nose casts a shadow to help create this effect. Probably one of the best from this collection.

Dual Cross

This is lit by crossing two light sources. Not one of my favorites but can bring more light to the face and remove deep shadows.

Dual Lamp Same Side

This uses two lamps on the same side(right). The pose was chosen by me. It seems almost counter-intuitive. Having the face cast in shadow while the back and side of her head are lit. It give just enough information. I like this approach from well-lit dramatic poses.

Behind

This was silhouette study. I have shared this picture in two previous posts. It is such a universally usable picture. It can be interpreted in so may ways. This photo is faceless and she holds her hair behind her head. Perhaps she is putting up her hair, or she is stressed after a long day. Maybe she is ready to face the world head on. Who knows?
It means what you need it to mean.
