Photographing a couple at Gardens By the Bay, Singapore - at Night
We had to think about our cameras steaming up too so there was another factor to count in! When we arrived we were luckily surprised by how quiet it was, maybe because most visitors go at day time but wither way were were glad to have the park almost to ourselves! It looked so beautiful with the blue trees all lit up and we couldn't wait to get the couple in locations and start shooting. The couple were so down to earth and fun that it felt like we were walking around the park with friends not clients!
After taking a few shots at the stunning Gardens we walked over to the Marina Bay Sands hotel, which is just incredible. With the boat like structure on top of three towers it really is just an impressive site to see! I always wanted to keep the couple the focus and incorporate the surroundings around them rather than let the buildings overwhelm the shots.
There is no need to worry about photographing in the dark at all, as long as you have the right gear and know how to use it, then your fine. We like to keep it as simple as possible and travel light, so as much as we could always use soft boxes etc its just not practical to take them everywhere with us. The 2 flashes, sometimes 4, are more than enough, lighter to carry and easy to use. Using what you have around you is important too, so whilst the flash can do a lot of the work for you, you still need to have some other light sources in the image or it might just not be bright enough. I always use my flash on manual so its just a case of up or down for power, pretty simple! One trigger on camera one on the flash, and that's as simple as it gets. We sometimes use gels and filters on the flash but in this case we didn't need to. Hope you enjoy the shots! And if you ever get chance to visit Singapore its definitely a must!
All of these shots are taken with a Canon 6D, 17-40mm lens and either one on-camera flash and/or one off-camera flash either in front or behind the couple. If you have any other questions about how I shot them please ask!
