Street Photography - Isolating your subject

in #photomag5 years ago

Tonight I am in the mood to write about my street photography tips. It's been a long time since I specifically wrote about, what I called, The Art of Street Photography.

Waiting Outside

Looking at my archive of street photos I found a couple of photos that show the technique of isolating your subject.

Isolating your subject may take on many forms, but the purpose is always to put more emphasis on your main subject. This means that this technique is a very conscious decision; you have noticed a subject and you want to put the emphasis on that specific subject.

In most cases, it is also a very slow process, as you may have to wait for the subject to move into a better position, or you have to move into a better position, or even wait for the background to move out of the way.

One of the most successful techniques is to ensure that your subject is in contrast to the background. Typically, make sure there is a direct light source on your subject while the background is in shade.

Most of my street photography is done with a fixed focal length lens, but this is one place where a zoom lens may come in handy by zooming in on the subject and thus removing some of the background detail.

A shallow depth of field could also help, but you need to realise that this may also result in removing so much of the background that the context is also removed.
Go Away!

It may even be as simple as slowing down the shutter speed in order to blur the background using panning as the technique.

What you looking at?

Next time you see an interesting subject for your street photography, ask yourself: What does the background add to the scene? If you do not have a clear answer, then it may be a good idea to try and remove the background by using one of these techniques.
