Nightmare - Some Words That Rhyme
My youngest woke me from a deep sleep last night. She was scared. I was tired. So that we both could get some rest, I laid down beside her, planning to only be there for a moment.
My eyes closed and then I drifted off. When I woke, it was already morning. And I was still tired.
Rhyming Words
Will you awake me, little child, in the dead of the night?
Will the bad men visit you in your dreams?
Will fear crept into your innocent mind?
I promise, dear child, it not as it seems.
Will you wake me from my quiet slumber?
Will your voice be calm or will you scream?
Will I be able to calm the terror?
Hush, my child, it's just a dream.
I'll offer you hugs, soft words, and prayers.
I will lay by your side as you drift away.
Close your eyes. Embrace the slumber.
Leave nightmares. Sweet dreams, please stay.
What a nice poem. I must be too used to @honeydue's writing, because I expected a twist that would have been scary... like the child's nightmare becoming real and you getting stuck in it while you sleep or something.
@improv, your comment made me chuckle. Since this was based on a real-life experience, I wanted to keep it as calm as possible, because I hope my wife and I can help my child overcome the fear.
