Then would its rapt fragrance
Have been the beauty of many ages...
Many pleasures...
Before ever it falls
Into the darkness of the night...
It would have been the cynosure
Of longing eyes...

Now beneath the ground
It lays, helpless...
Failing and fading in an hour
This is where it all ends
Lofty looks...
Haughty eyes...
Love-less embrace
That denied all
At the first rays...
🌹

It bloomed alone
And hugged the winds alone
It budded in beauty
But gave off a stench...
Now hear its whimpering whispers
As it goes the way...
Of all mortal...
Derobed...
Fragmented...
Withered...
🌹

Where are the dewy drops...
That caressed your languid leaves???
Where are the blushes...
That highlighted your coloured cheeks???
Why do you now lay...
Trodden and trampled on???
You are become dents and scratches
The withered rose...
You lacked mercy... Forgetful
That you would one day go the way
Of all mortal...
