insomnia - a poem
my memory is lightning
through the cavity of my chest
how can I break it open
to release the storm?

This poem was written by me one evening back in the fall, during a night rain storm. I had just finished my first round of exercises for my brain injury and while a lot of things had gotten better, I was still experiencing a lot of insomnia.
The apartment would be quiet and my partner would have gone to bed. I would feel a sudden heaviness of emotion through my chest and I would cry. Or rage. Or have to run. The emotion would vary but it would always come suddenly and with intensity when I was alone.
Now it's more than 6 months later and I feel... different. I still enjoy those late nights and the mysterious emotions they bring out in me. But I feel more in control of it and I feel more pleasant and gentle things too.
