hidden within a silent corner of your day
otherworldly words hesitate as raindrops
reticent lest they cause earth to tremble
lest a public’s sunny smiles turn to frowns

threats of displeasure carry your torches
mind absorbed in popular sounds and tropes
all the world’s your stage when you enter
and when you exit, she returns into world

so you sing secretly in tree tops too high
where no one sees your freedom as you fly
strange words floating to ground sputtering
muttering about the shallowness of it all
