Failure
i failed
to become a butterfly
when my cocoon closed around me
and turned my self into goo
my dreams of gossamer wings colored
perhaps
in a pretty shade of blue
faded
when scaled protrusions
of leather and bone
erupted from my back
and smoke puffed in rings
from my nose
and fire poured from my mouth
setting ablaze the people that dared
to stand before me
to poke me with sticks and
pelt my hide with rocks and
wound me
by judging my worth
to be less
than what they awarded themselves
i failed to be
the damsel in distress
the magical negro
the mule that carried the weight
of their crimes
that they piled on my back and
told me were mine
i failed
to not rise again
with their bootstraps like nooses
tied tightly around my neck
i failed
to struggle
to crush myself
into small enough bits
to fit
into the space allotted
for my soul
to die
