sometimes
you have to just grin & bear it
fake it til you make it
never let them see you sweat
was the advice she gave
so sagely
but it left me bereft
of warmth
i agonized over
every decision i made
& struggled to live
by the creed she instilled
in me as a child
but my soul cried out
no more
my pain was not invisible
my breath was indivisible
& the chain that bound my tongue
was banished forevermore
