Battlefield #Prose

in #poetry5 years ago

I was on my feet
Fighting for what I believed in
The man before me
Clenched a machete for the same reason
And for a second I wondered
Why we were then fighting
And bam
On the floor I lay
Next to cowards like me.

I saw the darkening sky
And thought of the angry gods
Whom my doubtful swords
Had failed
Roaring thunders sounded
Like my ashamed ancestors
Great men and women
Who defiantly fought
For my freedom to be sought.

I succumbed to shame
When my name
Hanged from their tongues
Like that's the caitiff knight
Who couldn't stand up for a fight
He was trained for
As his curious mind wandered
To foreign lands for lunch
Missing the landing punch.

I was on my feet again
When l licked my pain
Strength was finding it's way
Back to the muscles shame eroded away
Ready to fight for what I believe in
And the man before me
Still tightened his swords for the same reason
And the need to ask why
Threatened to have me on my knees.

Getting into the weekend like 📝... how is your end? Looking to continue with my current read... The time travelers wife. There's also spending some time with the kids, some grocery shopping, studying, this community, salon, and laundry. Wish me luck... sigh!

We are all in some battlefield... ain't we? Have a great weekend ahead!

Beauifully writ. Im mosdef in a battlefield of my own and now i dont even know who is winning but im trying. Do have a splendid weekend. Is the novel a fantasy piece or sci-fi? Im reading poetry by langston hughes. Do enjoy your inspirations

Thank you :) Keep trying... That's all that matters. It's a fictional story but definitely worth my read. I hear there's even a movie on it. I prefer books most of the time or book then movie.

I should try Langston Hughes very soon. I have been looking to read poetry 💕

I don't read poetry much. I want to correct that. I need to delve into different ideas and philosophies in order to give my own writing more body. There's nothing new under the sun. I just might find something among the old masters that would give my creative juices a jump start.

That has always been the idea, hasn't it? To keep writing until you unlock whatever the masters of pens unlocked before you. We just recycle words to fit our generation... There's nothing to come up with just stuff to rewrite in our very own voices!

This is a wonderful poets conversation... So I'm going to be 'piggy in the middle' as we call it here in the UK 🤣

I've already got a good recommendation in langston hughes from @warpedpoetic, who is your favourite poet to read @tezmel?

I'm reading a book of poems by Ted Hughes at the moment:

Against the rubber tongues of cows and the hoeing hands of men
Thistles spike the summer air
And crackle open under a blue-black pressure.

Thistles, by Ted Hughes

Loved your poem, by the way. The feeling of the warriors guilt really came through for me.

Ted hughes? Ill get on that once im through with langston. My aim is to go through different experiences, schools of thought, styles from different eras.

You are welcome to join in. Here at home, we would call you 'aliye katikati' (the one in the middle) in Swahili :)

I will then definitely look for Langston Hughes. We say that two men never rumoured wrong information.

I read oldies like Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath, Maya Angelou and I am trying Emily Brontë. Thank you for coming 💕
