In and Among

We found each other in the nooks and crannies of the world,
subtle but never inscrutable:

like incoming tides spilling and pooling among the rocks;

like dandelions defying concrete and emerging from the sidewalk;

like slivers of moonlight peeking between curtains at midnight;

like gusts of wind bobbing and swirling through the leaves of an oak.

We were happy in these places —
playing hide and seek with our hearts
while we dared to whisper
the most meaningful nothings we could imagine,
hoping that the echoes would reverberate

and spread

and reach

the farthest corners of our planet made for two.

Hoping that maybe we would hear them
after all.
