Thougts on EU approving article 11 and 13 and Australia Censorship

in #politics5 years ago (edited)

Today is really a sad day for internet freedom. Article 11 is summerized as a link tax meaning every time you share a piece of content online which belongs to someone else, you have to pay a tax. The main consequence of this article is that competition and innovation is squashed as alternative media creators can't afford such costs and stay afloat. This means only the mainstream media companies can afford sharing content content. Article 13 is a copyright filter which stops you from uploading content which is copyrighted unless you have permission. What happens now is that transformative content is impossible to post and you basically can't critique a piece of content without the author's permission. This means mainstream media outlets can post whatever news they want without dissenting opinions. Censorship is in full swing in the EU although it will take months for the EU to fully implement these changes. This level of censorship is higher than China's great firewall.

Once this articles are in full swing, big tech social media companies such as Youtube, Facebook, Linkedin etc have 2 options.

  1. Comply with EU laws and add content filters for every person posting every single content costing millions of dollars to create causing deep cuts into the companies' profits.
  2. Pull their social media service from the entire European region blocking Europeans access to their websites saving millions of dollars.

There are of course social media websites such as steemit and minds which are decentralised platforms and censorship resistant. I believe that the EU's only option would be block access to those websites since they cant shut down a blockchain so easily. After that, VPNs in the EU will be cracked down as well.

The one last thing I would like to touch on is the censorship in Australia and New Zealand. After the terrorist attack at Christchurch, Bitchute and Bestgore.com has been blocked still to this day. What's awfully convenient is that the mainstream media of Australia had articles 3 days later with strong allegations about the killer's motive and ideology. It is simply impossible to have such a strong case about the attack in such a short time. I believe that there is more behind the official story already they are blaming right wing extremism as the root cause when the manifesto indicates that the killer was a strong communist. In conclusion today is a sad day as the internet lost the battle to stay free in the EU. This event can be a precedent as more countries might follow suit.
