RWANDA: From Genocide To SINGAPORE OF AFRICA In Just 25 Years?

in #politics5 years ago

From outside the flashy new convention center in Kigali, Josh Friedman discusses how #Rwanda has transformed from the site of genocide and economic collapse to a modern, advanced and orderly country by regional standards. Under the leadership of rebel leader-turned-President Paul Kagame, Rwanda has developed rapidly and has been dubbed by some commentators as the Singapore of #Africa. Despite glaring differences in the standard of living between the two countries, there are clear similarities in that both Rwanda and Singapore have undergone rapid economic growth, which has been coupled with restrictive social policies, including enforced cleanliness.

What is fueling this economic growth in Rwanda? And has the country really climbed out of poverty? Josh delves into some statistics and shares some observations.

Fascinating when I try to get there in 2000 I was basically told I would be killed and robbed I got a lift to a few miles from the border but could not get any closer. Great to see it's over the majorities of the problems. Looking forward to more. I always want to visit the forest with the silverbacks💯🐒

Sorry for the late response. Where exactly were you? Were you trying to cross into Rwanda from Tanzania? Do you remember what if anything was happening around the border? I skipped seeing the gorillas. I hear they are very pricey.

Not to worry!

I was in Uganda at the time. It was mid 2000 so not too long after the troubles and it was still fairly unsettled. Shame about the gorillas, these things are so expensive; only way to to volunteer but then you still have to pay thousands 💯🐒

Interesting. Rwanda and Uganda turned on each other sometime around then. I just spent a little more than a week in Uganda. A couple videos are coming. I figure I'll come back to the region and see the wildlife when I'm better off financially.

Yes that ring a bell. Stunning place I would love to return. The wildlife is amazing but increasingly expensive to see it. Although I did have a free encounter with a leopard although it was not particularly sight seeing at the time 💯🐒
