Hey US: What is the "liberal elite"

in #politics5 years ago

I have seen the term "liberal elite" used a lot in a very perjorative use. I always found that strange.

First of all, "liberal" for most people (at least here in Europe) has a positive connotation (Except in neoliberalism). You know: freedom, self-decision, respect for everyone and so on. It sounds strange to use it as a substitute for "shit".

And then there is "elite". Granted, even for me European "elite" has a slightly bitter connotation. "Elites" are those people who decide hat will happen, and that naturally means that their interest will find more place than that of "Non-Elites".

However, the pure hate that can often be felt reminds me of a serf whose newlywed wife was just carried away by the lord for his "right of the first night" (which is mainly a fiction btw.)

How come?

What does "liberal elite" mean for you / what is meant by those using it around you?

"Liberal" used to have such connotations in the U.S. but modern liberals tend to be statists and socialists and anti-freedom in a number of ways. Liberal elites are often hypocrites in that they bash the so-called "top 1%" and complain about how the wealthy have too much money but then they themselves are typically very wealthy (see Bernie Sanders). They also tend to jump right into ad-hominem attacks if you disagree with them. Do you support increased border security? You must be a racist as that's the only reason you could possibly have...and so forth. If you support their opponents then it must be because you are ignorant and stupid (people like Hillary Clinton come right out and say such things). They also seem to feel that the law does not or should not apply to them (see Hillary Clinton for a good example again). These are stereotypes of course but broadly accurate. However, this isn't a term I think most average people use. You hear it more on political talk shows and such.

Some of these traits belong more generally to political elite than strictly liberal elite but the two major political parties in this country get harder to tell apart with each passing year. Most politicians in power don't have any principles to speak of, liberal or otherwise, they just do whatever they think will ensure that they keep their job. Clinton and Obama were proponents of increased border security when they were in power. Now that they are not, they are opposed to it...presumably because Trump supports it I guess and they have to be different to appeal to their supporters. That's just one example but it applies to many other issues.
