Picnic Day!

in #powerhousecreatives5 years ago

Well.. what can I say... today was about 30 degrees (real measure... -23847 +/- 38561 in the weird American system...) in The Netherlands. That usually means that the country grinds to a halt as everyone flocks to the beaches. It is a weird sort of thing, as the country find this sort of heat to be a major heatwave event... whilst in Australia it is a pretty normal day for the brighter months!

Anyway, we've learnt our lessons from the past few years... on days like this... DON'T go to the beach! It is a nightmare with the entire population of the country there and with tiny amounts of space and loud revelers leaving rubbish all over the place. Plus, the beach isn't that nice compared to Australian beaches anyway... and the water isn't so much fun to be in!

So, we decided to go for a nice early bike ride to get to a shady park with a playground... and to pack a picnic! Actually, there were three families that were in on this avoid the beach mania plan... However, we were the ones that had to ride the furthest (about 15 km each direction). Initially I had thought that we would just take one normal bike and the bak-fiets... but in the end, our oldest wanted to ride as well... we try to encourage that anyway, so after fixing up her seat to be at a better height for the long ride, we set off!

Early enough in the morning, it was not so hot... although it was a touch windy in spots... however, it was a pretty nice and picturesque route that we took. So, we had a nice relaxing ride as we had left more than early enough to make sure that we wouldn't need to ride hard. Plus, we had made allowance for the fact that we had a slow bakfiets and a 7 year old as well....

Eventually, we made it to the park area... it is a relatively large green area in Den Haag (The Hague)... what is quite nice about The Netherlands (or at least in The Hague) is that there are many little wooded areas with playgrounds (or just places to sit and relax)... you have to find them, as they can be easy to miss (especially if you drive around the town)... but once you find them, they are great places to have a day out.

It was my wife who had suggested this park... it is a place that she comes to each week... but normally she enters from a different side! So, we had a few loops and wrong turns before we found the playground and picnicking area.

... but we did end up finding it! A relatively shaded and cool spot where we could hide away for the hot afternoon... away from the direct heat of the Sun and away from the maniac crowds at the beach. Already, as we were approaching the park, we could see that there were hordes of people heading in the direction of the beaches (cars, bikes, scooters...)... all getting cranky and worked up in the hot weather as the traffic jam got worse and worse! Definitely not my idea of a fun way to spend an already hot day!

It was funny... tying up our bikes like there were horses outside a saloon from the old Wild West! Anyway, those are our main chariots... the bakfiets (a heavy and slow cargo bike...), and more zippy oma-fiets (grandmother bike). We used to have this really great little green bike that was so light and fast... unfortunately, it got written off when a visitor borrowed it and got wiped out by a car.... I miss that bike (and the visitor was okay...she survived and wasn't irreparably injured... broken collar-bone... could have been much much much worse...).

Our toddler wasn't able to do the 15 km ride... she did want to do it with her scooter, but we are nasty parents and we said NO! When she got to the park, she really wanted to do some scooting... so I did go with here for a bit.

We discovered this funny house....

... with some really beautiful rose bushes... I think it would be something that would look really nice in our garden. We do have space for some climbers... I think! I'd better check with the chief garden planner...

After the picnic... we did have an ice-cream (of course!)... Riding back was much less picturesque as we took a more direct route back... so mainly through the urban town areas... so, I was more busy trying not to hit people who would just step out in front of bikes rather than trying to take photos... unfortunately, it was also crazy windy by this time as well. Our oldest was a trooper... but maybe about with 3 kilometres to go, she couldn't ride any more... (she had totaled around 25 km for the whole day.... not counting the ice-cream detour!)... so, I put her bike in the bakfiets (these are super handy things!) and we finished the day like that!

The last shot you took is really engaging following your daughter. I love going to the park. Picnics are the best.

I did not understand what the meant lol. 30 degrees here is below freezing and no one is going to the park. :)

Someone @bengy thinks he's funny. Ok it's funny LOL.

It isn't just funny... It's hilarious!

Ok ...Yes it's hilarious 🤣

Ha ha! No no, your system is the strange one! Ours is logical and backed by the constants of the Universe instead of some random dead kings appendage...

hahaha so true, so very true

What a fantastic day to spend with the family @bengy

I totally agree that the body beach would be more hassle than it's worth. It looked like a beautiful ride in and out. My wife has been to the area and she said it is lovely.

25k for your daughter is brilliant. That's a fair old ride that. Love the shot of her in the bin at the front.

Cheers

Yeah... it was an epic ride for her, it was in two stages... but still, it eventually got the better of her! It was also a bit too hot on the way back as well, and we had run out of water! Anyway, she did it like a champ, luckily it is a pretty flat country here, so having all that extra stuff in the support bike is no problem (for a short while...).

30 is far too hot for me

It is pretty warm... oddly enough, I feel it more in Europe than I do in Australia!

What a grand day out, agree completely with avoiding beaches during busy periods.

That bakfiets steals it, what a great way to be able to pack up and go with additional paraphernalia, or just a brave little girl and her bicycle.

Enjoyed your outing in a beautiful spot @bengy

Yes, I love the bakfiets! It's such a handy way to do the shopping or to cart the kids around. It is pretty heavy to ride though, but thankfully the Netherlands is pretty flat. However a good string headwind can really ruin your day!

Thanks for featuring me as a suggested post for Powerhousecreatives!

Seeing the whole family out on bicycles, something not see here too often in villages.

Bakfiets reminded me of the ice-cream vendors we had many years ago pedaling the throughout the towns.

Pleasure sharing your content in the pretty surroundings you find yourself in, have an awesome new week.

Love love this fun family day @bengy! Your daughters are sweet, I'm sure so happy to spend the day with mom and dad. Beautiful roses, I too would add more to my house :) Finishing with excellent ice cream, a perfect end to the day. Thanks for sharing with us!

I really think that climbing roses would be a nice addition to a house wall... We had thought about it at one point, but then didn't do it... can't remember why, but now my wife is suggesting it again!

This looks like a fun trip and you took some great photos @bengy. 👏

It was a really nice relaxing day... in the shade, the heat was not too bad! Much better than the desert that is the beach!

What a great park for a picnic. You got me with the bakfiets! A trifle clunky but useful. It also explains why, in South Africa, a ute is called a bakkie....

Yep, the bakfiets is one of our treasures! It is the sort of thing that would only work in the Netherlands die to the flat nature of the land. It is perfect for young famili. You can get one with an electric motor to help with starting it (it is super heavy to ride, a bit like a truck!) but those get pretty expensive...

Everything looks like a real expedition ... a very good choice to avoid the crowded beach. Any crowded space should be avoided.
The park is very nice and it was definitely a good picnic.

Yes, we had lots of stuff to put in the bucket bike... It's handy to have so much space there!

Yes, of course!

So right now it's +4783 degrees but later today we could got to -384579 degrees. It's Colorado and mother nature is not happy LOL. Looks like an amazing park. Very glad you guys had a great time.

LOL LOL! That's a nice range of temperatures that you get over there! I do remember visiting a National Park in Colarado and seeing the sunny day in winter whilst snow was still resting in the shadows of the mountains. It was such a beautiful area... but it was quite some time ago!

Honestly, I've never understood the draw towards going to the beach, which is the ONE PLACE guaranteed to not have shade, on a scorching hot day - and I grew up on (what is technically) an island! I love where you decided to go instead - it all looks so lovely and cool. Hope you have many more bike picnics like that!

This is my thoughts exactly! The beach is a desert... and people go there to cook themselves? It really doesn't sound like fun! Escaping into the shad of the trees with a bit of a breeze and water from the plants in the air... much better!
