Ulog 87: Making Beeswax Bowl Covers

in #powerhousecreatives5 years ago (edited)

Well... Now that Mr Golden D is back to work after his heart attack and surgery,I have been ever-so-busy in the garden, doing chores, getting back into the swing of homestead life and getting some little tasks completed.

And one of the things I wanted to make was some beeswax bowl covers.

Sometime back in 2017, I had received a white 100% cotton flour sack towel when I ordered some gallon size jars online; and at the time I set it aside and forgot about it. Well one day last month I was watching a YouTube video about how someone took 100% cotton fabric and made beeswax bowl covers... the light bulb went off and I added that task to my to-do list.

And earlier this week I had the chance to do after my morning coffee.

The original flour sack was 30x36 (inches) and I ended up cutting into equal sizes so that I would have four pieces of cloth to work with.

I wanted to make these first for when I make homemade bread or pizza dough that needed to rise in a bowl. And secondly to keep bowls of food covered when I was working in the homestead kitchen without having to use store bought foils and plastic wrap.

Trying to be eco-friendly and stop all the waste of these manufactured products here.

So I preheated my oven to the lowest temperature (which is 200-degrees) and laid the first towel on the cookie sheet. Make sure to use a cookie sheet you will NOT be using again for cooking food. I sprinkle some organic beeswax over the cloth. Cover it enough but don't over load the beeswax as this will create problems.

I let the cloth bake in the oven for five minutes and let it cool just enough so I could touch it without burning myself then I hung it up on a hanger to cool more. If you leave it on the cookie sheet too long, it will stick- so be vigilant with removing it in time.

Wow, this is the first time ever I've seen such a thing and method.

I happened onto the idea and recipe from a YT channel and now I subscribe to her channel. GREAT DIY ideas there

Yes, lots to learn form YT!

I have seen these being sold and have often thought I would like to make some. Your tutorial was right on time :D

Do you have to retreat them on occasion and are they washable?

Not washable that I know of but I will be retreating them over the course of use. From what I saw and read you should re-bake in beeswax as the filmy layer begins to disappear.

Sounds good! What a savings of foil and plastic wrap...I like it!

This is a picture of some of mine. They still look/work pretty good after about 4 months.

I love this idea! Beeswax coverings are terribly expensive to buy. Could we not use a sheet of parchment on the tray to stop the sticking and be able to use the sheet pan again?

Glad to hear hubby is back up to strength and thank you for sharing how you made the beeswax wraps. I have featured this post in the Homesteading - Living Naturally newsletter.
