Supposing there was a group of people traveling about your area, led by a charismatic speaker who claims that the world is ending soon. He promises he alone can save you, but only if you sell your belongings, devote the rest of your life to him, and cut off family members who try to stop you.
He also wants to change your name, advises you to leave your home/job if necessary to follow him, and says that if you don’t love him more than your own family, you’re not worthy of him. What sort of group is that?

Only according to the Bible. No other source from that time period corroborates Biblical miracles.
Muhammad performed many miracles, according to the Qur'an and Hadiths. Does that prove Islam is true? What about Joseph Smith's miracles in the Book of Mormon?
Christianity could not have exploded the way it did in the first century if something very unusual hadn't happened with Jesus. If it was all a lie nobody would have bought it as all would have known it who were alive at that time. They did. Literature from the period not written by Christianity mentions it as a cult, and Jesus as a magician and one of many people claiming to be the messiah (as is still the case today)

They did believe because they had good reason to believe, they all knew the miracles were true.. none of those magicians or claimers of messiahship came to anything, unlike Jesus. Point remains, if it was a lie it would have gone nowhere.

Yeah, and that's when it really began to grow rapidly. That tends to happen when a major government makes your religion the only legal one.

Well no, it had begun to spread rapidly shortly after the Resurrection, One of the reasons why it was declared the official religion was because how widespread it had become.
Agree miracles don't necessarily make something true, that's a whole mother topic of discussion, the point was that people knew that the things said about Jesus were not some made up story.
The couple I've seen had already made up their minds that it was all nonsense, no attempt to objectively dissect the evidence.
