making of "Hots or Shots" flame thrower

in #production6 years ago (edited)

Here is the complete workflow for a 3d flamethrower in Cinema4d using the TurbulenceFD particle handler.

shotZZ0140.png

It starts with the 3D text tool to generate the 3d text using the motext tool wich makes it easy to generate 3d beveled text.

We continue using the c4D standard particle emitter . . . .

duplicate the emitter and change the fractal seed for second particle emitter

import a turbulenceFD container and tag the two emitters with turbulenceFD emitter tags. I overlayed two turbulenceFD tags for each emitter to give it a more natural look ore turbulence action.

Now tweak the parameters until satisfied or until you fall asleep. You can tweak practically forever. Only production deadlines can make you stop tweaking !

Use gravitiy friction and air density and turbulence forces and adjust parameters until it looks ok.
preview simulation, adjust, preview, adjust, preview, adjust, preview, adjust, preview, adjust, preview......

change the simulation overall detailness by adjusting the voxelsizes then render the final 3d simulation into caches/frame. This simulation took about 80 minutes to calculate on a gtx 1080GPU and has about 117 GB, quite a lot of data for some flames. (the photoshop and after effects guys already shake their heads).

Yes you can make nice looking flames easier with the particular plugin in after effects with no rendertime at all but if you look at the details you will find out that if you have glas-text and the only lightsources in the scene are the flame particles themself, then there is probably no way around simulating the whole thing with global illumination renderer for realistic light distribution by shooting millions of photons trough the scene.

here is the final sequence with accurate glas reflections, refractions with a scene only lightened by the flames.

I haven't worked with 3d animation before so it's awesome to get a quick peak at how it's done

That last image, "Vote for....." Dude that looks friggen epic!

Okaaayyy..you left me with no words. I always wanted to know how they make it but of course nobody is telling the "inside" of the process. But now I get it, not so easy from what I can see...Nice one!

OKAY SO THIS LOOKS PRETTY INTERESTING
