Good morning guys, this is @bait002 the founder of the offline minnow school where minnows are mentored and groomed. I have been writing to help those who need to learn image optimisation for some days now and today, I will be going to the fourth part of the series in this post. The golden maxim through this blogging series remains;

write as though you have a reputation to protect because, you truly do...

What to expect in this series

  • where to find images.
  • how to select good images.
  • technical aspect relating to format and web compatibility.
  • legal issues about images.
  • Lastly, some additional tools to use.

Legal Issues: Using Images

As a blogger, in this case a steemian, it is important to know a fee legal concepts and terminologies. Take for example, you cannot write "funny" statements about other people, you cannot use other author’s materials, and you also cannot just use any images that you find because you consider them nice.

Disclaimer: I am NOT a legal practitioner and this is not to be considered a legal advice.

Below is an overview of the actual concepts and pitfalls that we need to be cautious of. Seriously, in spite of the fact that I have been blogging on Steemit for quite some time now and knowing about the anti-plagiarism rule, I still find it out to figure out how to appropriately use images from a legal point of view!

Let us take a look; photo licenses

When we're talking about the legalism in aspects of photo or image utilization, the actual (most important) thing you are doing is playing around the varying licenses that are connected to an images. Every images could be different, the process of their creation also different, however, the implications of getting it wrong can be adverse.

Look now, this is how it works. When an individual takes a photo or creates an image, they basically own the copyright to that photo. This is how it works in most cases in the world. Except if the one who made such image or took such photo was was employed by an organization, then we can consider such images a property of that organisation. But basically, it belongs to the one who made the image.

That image creator can then provide licenses through which other people can use his/her photos and images under certain circumstances and conditions.

Your goal as a begginer in the blogsphere is to choose from which are Royalty Free, Creative Commons and Public Domain. Although, each one of them have its own restriction(s):

Royalty Free

This is the type you find in most of these stock photo sites. Here you pay a fee (one time in most cases) in order to use the images without tons of restrictions taged on them. However, that doesn't warrant you yo sell them. Also, when you are using this as part of your branding, careful considerations must be made.

Creative Commons

In this case voluntaryst or Creative Commons: a non-profit organization that has provided some licenses that empowers and encourages photographers and image creators to put their material up on the internet for free and have people use it yet, not allowing anyone make money off such images. There are different categories of licenses. Flickr is a good place to find the summary of these whole thing.

Public Domain

In this place, you find various images with no copyright because, in most cases, such copyrigt has expired already or an image was not eligible for copyright to start with. A lot of such images are relating to the Government usage. However, it is often important to reference such images. That is, cite its source!

There are tons of licenses out there. Each requiring time to understand due to the various and varying restrictions attached to each one of them. This makes figuring them out kind of tricky. So it’s important to get your images from trusted sources.

The next post will address a little bit more about the legal part of image utilization.

I appreciate you for your visit to my blog, and it has been an amazing thing writing to you about this subject. This is Bait and I'm bringing words from the offline minnow school.

For those who seek to know what this project is all about, you can read that below;

PHASE 1:

At this stage we teach some minnows a,t our offline classroom to help attain self-sustenance. These minnows will then work with us as a team, reproducing other minnows. Currently, we have just wrapped up with Phase 1. And Phase 2 which is more demanding kicked off already.

PHASE 2:

This basically is the core of the vision is to raise steem-backed entrepreneurs of young people. The method through which we execute the absolute idea goes as follows;

  • SKILL ACQUISITION PROJECTS: where various skills will be taught to foster the emergence of new entrepreneurs that thrive on voluntarism.

  • THE MINNOW SCHOOL TALENT HUNT: we greatly hope to give minnows who are not really writers but have other gifts such as singing, painting, dancing, acting a platform to express themselves and get their creativity beyond their minds. Basically, we are giving these young people a voice and ultimately awaken the writer in them.

  • THE MINNOW SCHOOL ART/MUSIC EXHIBITIONS: here talented young people will get to showcase their talents and the value they have to offer to the community. We will be sponsoring art projects and professional music careers will emerge with this.
