Today in History - April, 19, 1943. Dr. Albert Hofmann intentionally ingests 250 micrograms of his 25th synthesis if lysergic acid - lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD-25). Hofmann, not knowing how strong his creation was, (threshold effects are felt at 20ug), began to feel the powerful effects of the substance and wanted to leave his lab to get home. During this time, there was a gasoline shortage and automobile restriction because of the war, many people had to travel by foot or bicycle. Hofmann was accompanied home by his lab partner on bicycle. Hofmann's famous bicycle ride home marks the first intentional LSD experience in history. LSD was introduced into psychology and psychiatry to help better understand the mind. It was a cornerstone of the countercultural/hippy movement. The substance inspired creative and technological breakthroughs. The music and art of the 60's were influenced by this substance.
