Why do you, yes, you, procrastinate?😐

Everyone knows this popular quote "procrastination is a thief of time", yet even as we say it, we still do it.

What does it mean to procrastinate?

Basically, to procrastinate means "I'll do it later".

So many times, we find ourselves saying or thinking "I'll do it later". It could be your morning meditation or exercise, it could be an assignment or a writeup. I've been saying I'll write this article for days now, it's not my fault, it was my birthday and I had to make preparations towards it, lol. Sounds like a great excuse right? This right here is a typical example of procrastination giving excuses to things you ought to do.

I once read a joke about procrastinators, they were proposing a meeting to "cure" their "ailment" but they all suggested a later time because they had something to do. Procrastination, a time of thief!

The best time to plant a tree is yesterday, not today, not tomorrow. When you are always saying I'll do it later today, I'll do it early tomorrow, you are a procrastinator. It could be a text message to someone, a blood test in the medical laboratory, filling and submission of an application, visiting an old friend, in fact the common ones that we are almost are guilty of are delaying passing out urine and eating because we are enjoying a video game, a nice movie/book, or a chat with friends online or offline.

Now to the big question, why do you procrastinate?
You may fall into one or more of the following categories.

  1. Fear of what may be; rather than submit that proposal and get a no, we sometimes postpone it till die minute so that we can blame time factor in case we don't get it. Put yourself out there today, a no is a preparation for a yes.

  2. Let me start small; this affects a lot of entrepreneurs and young people. We tend to avoid risk by procrastinating, rather than invest a large amount, we'll test it out with a little sum while we wait for return on investment. Some risks are worth taking, identify them.

  1. Perfectionism; ain't we all the little Miss/Mr perfect sometimes? We won't start until we are sure we have gotten it right so we don't get mocked or embarrassed. Do it now, life is a learn as you go adventure.

  2. Distraction; heavens know social media is both a blessing and a curse in this present age and time. It carries us away from the task at hand, we'd rather surf the internet or instant message our friends than face a pressing need. Some of us get distracted by almost everything: food, money, phone, sleep and even people. Feed your focus, starve your distraction; that is the way to make it

  3. You don't know how to get started; often times, we find ourselves thinking "where do I start from?". Well the good news today is, start from somewhere. You start building a house by first laying the foundation. List out what you need to do, break it down and work on it.

  4. Motivation; little or no motivation from self, family and friends and even your environment is a major turn off. When no one encourages you, you tend to procrastinate. Surround yourself with things and people that motivate you.

Why do you procrastinate? Have you identified yourself with a reason? Apply the solutions I proffered and you will soon see positive changes.

It's about time to post this write-up, enough of my procrastination.
