It's Too Much Effort: Report Finds Majority of Young Adults Prefer Staying Home

A recent report that was conducted by market research group Mintel, suggests that a majority of young adults in the United States today prefer to stay in rather than put in the effort to go out and enjoy the night.

It's estimated that 3 in 10 adults, between the ages of 24-31, would rather have drinks at home than go out, because they say it takes too much effort.

Considering all that's involved in such an endeavor, there are a variety of drawbacks people find to going out for the night, such as waiting in line, getting dress up, the cost of gas, traffic, waiting on customer service, hoping the order turns out right, getting a taxi home if needed after drinking too much etc.

That's why many young adults today say that they would rather skip all of that, save themselves time and money, and just stay at home.

With the myriad of entertainment options available at their finger tips, there's plenty for them to do by opting to stay in rather than going out. There are also a growing number of delivery options available that will bring anything and everything, depending on where you live, from beer and pizza to cat food, cannabis, or Taco Bell.

Turns out that saving money is a big motivator...

For a majority of young adults today, it's suggested that money is driving their decision to stay home, with 69 percent of respondents from the report suggesting that this was a main reason for why they decided to stay in and drink at home rather than go out.

Should restaurants and bars be worried? The restaurant industry is a multi-billion dollar industry, and despite the preference that many have shown to stay home, it's been suggested that consumers will be spending more funds toward dining out in the future.

One previous survey from 2016 found that many young adults today are still spending a large portion of their income on eating out.

Opting For Convenience

However, there are still many challenges that restaurants face today, struggling to keep-up with the changing trends, new technology, and so on. For those who have invested in their own delivery services or partnered with services that provide this, they will still be an option for those who want to stay home and eat or drink rather than go out. And for those who haven't yet done so, they might want to reconsider.

Investment bank UBS previously made a forecast on delivery sales for online food, suggesting that by 2030 we might see this space grow more than 20 percent on an annual basis. They suspect that some day this preference for convenience and delivery, will eventually make the traditional kitchen a thing of the past.

Aside from delivery, other ways that restaurants and bars have been setting themselves apart is by offering some sort of special marketing event, that folks can take part in by dining at their establishment. Social media plays an important role in driving success in business today, especially for food venues. We've already seen places like Red Lobster, Olive Garden, and others, coming-up with ideas like their Endless Shrimp or Lobsterfest etc. It's been frequently suggested that more people today are looking to spend their money on experiences rather than things and so restaurants and other venues might do well to consider this and incorporate this into their marketing tactics.

Many people in the United States are still eating out on a regular basis and even spending more on eating out at restaurants, than they are on groceries. Their disdain for cooking has also been cited as a motivator for this dining-out trend.

My wife andI (way beyond that demographic age group) have cut way back on going out for many things. The prices are foolish... they breached the $15, $20, $25, and now $30 for a good restaurant. Add to that a bottle of wine and you are over $150 for the dinner alone. Now we search for the BYOB restaurants as well... they tend to be even less for their meals as well. We never order in either, if you can get to enjoy the meal prep process and the fruits of YOUR labor, those same $30 meals are less than half.

On top of that enjoy the comforts of our home...

Frankly I don't think it's worth going out for a just a dinner unless you are looking to enjoy the experience with friends or family. Going for a dinner as a ritual or a mere effort to seek company...............do people even do that anymore?

Prices are ridiculous and people nowadays have more complicated diets, then they have had before. Paleo, Ketonic, Vegan, Gluten free.................... etc. All this makes the whole idea of going out to dinner a less than useful one.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy life without getting poorer

Keto is actually super simple. Don't look at the menu, just order a steak. Problem solved. That said, you're better off making one at home. :)

haha! that last line was great 👍

Haha..so true words..

I'm not in the USA but that's good for what you say, so a group of friends get together in one house and I'm sure they're going to have a good time and have a lot more fun, they only ask for a few beers and something to eat, ah more safe at home and save more expenses

I am not USA, but have the same habit. Social media made us so busy that we dont really need to go out in order to have fun. The technology changed our lives completely and thats what I see as the first reason. Not that I am 24h on social media, but least there is something I can do at home if I feel bored :D

I must be younger than I think, then. :)

Great post as always @doitvoluntarily ! back in my day Lol, it was all part of the fun getting ready to go out! we had more time for these things before the internet , cell phones, and chromebooks came along, we had all the time in the world ! upped and resteemed😂✌👍😀

Everything getting expensive..I agree stay home and enjoy the night...

A pint in my area costs like 8 dollars, i can stay home and buy like 6 beers for that price. And other drunk people are annoying. And you get shit for smoking weed outside. It was fun 20 years ago but I only go out when out of town friends stop by.

I totally agree with your views..

Works that are very helpful and inspiring,i am amazed to you,i have to learn a lot from you my brother,@doitvoluntarily
