Words that change worlds

Working with children have taught me, or rather, reinforced what I already knew from other experiences, on how words can so easily affect on how kids grow, learn and act. Words as simple as "Well job! I knew you could do it!" or "It's ok, mistakes happen! try again" can teach a school-age child that they can do things on their own, that we believe in them, that we trust them and it also makes them feel cared for, it helps sow feelings so important as this age, like self-confindence, trust, responsability, duty and self-steem. Also words like "Why are you like this?" "How dare you do this?" "You are no good at this" "You are a problem in this class" can and will also shape the child's psyche; fear, low self-steem, anxiety, negativity, poor studying techniques, irreponsabilty are, more often than not, deeply rooted to experiences lived during childhood in which actions or words hurt the child in some way, as we know, when we are young we still have not developed defense mechanism like rationalitation, which alows us to process things in a way we are less affected. Childs listen, see and feel everything as it is, no filters, so words will affect their development for ever, maybe we didn't meant to say that, maybe we were angry and we lost our temper but childs do not understand that and thing we said to them during a bad time might acommpany and even restrict them till adulthood. Let's use kinder words.
