READING. It is better to study by reading to understand what was taught than to memorize step by step, word for word what was taught.

While it is really not a bad thing to memorize, it is actually better to understand what you are taught. Reading helps you understand better. Reading makes it possible to be able to interpret whatever that was taught in another form.

WHen you read to understand, you can explain what was taught in the way that you understand it. You will be able to confidently interpret your knowledge without using the same words that was used for you. But when you memorize, you are confined to using same words. You do not completely understand what was taught but you are able to say exactly, word for word what you have been taught. Memorizing restricts your level of understanding and could be really dangerous. If you forget one line, it may be difficult to remember the rest.

Reading to understand is long term because the knowledge stays with you for a much longer time but Memorizing is rather for the short term, the knowledge disappears when you no longer have need for it. Especially if there's something new to memorize.

If you want to attain educational success, I'll advise that it's best to READ and not Memorize.

Cheers, JI.
