Rainwater Harvesting

We all have come across the theories of global warming and its adverse effects. It will apparently have a direct toll on water. Approximately 70% of earth’s surface is covered by water. Due to global warming, this number is decreasing rapidly. Although the sea and ocean has plenty of water, it cannot be consumed, due to which there is shortage of water.

Many people have started adopting the technique of Rainwater Harvesting, so that consumption of ground water is reduced. Rainwater harvesting is done on small scale as well as on large scale. Mostly water harvesting is beneficial for farmers, as they need water on large scale. Even the harvested rainwater can be used for drinking after purifying it.

Why Rainwater Harvesting is necessary?

1. Convenient to maintain :- Rainwater can be stored in simple way by attaching the catchment area to the tanks or cisterns. The best catchment area is the roof of our house. It will reduce the use of ground water and the energy resource could be used efficiently.
2. Low water bills : - The water bills could be reduced substantially by encouraging rainwater harvesting. Large scale industries could benefit by adopting this method.
3. Can be used for non-drinking purposes :- The harvested water can be used for many purposes like cleaning, watering the plants, washing clothes, flushing in toilets, etc. By utilising it in proper manner could help us in conversing drinking water.
4. Good for irrigation :- Farmers should look into this technique as it could be helpful for irrigation. As the roofs are best catchment area, hence the water can be stored easily. Also, by adapting this method, electricity usage reduced, which is required for starting the fuel based machines.
