Ray Kurzweil is an inventor and futurist who has championed the Law of Accelerating Returns, claiming that computer technology is following an exponential path that will lead to the Singularity - a point in time when computer power reaches super intelligence and all things are possible.
He predicts the Singularity by the year 2045. But that's just one of his predictions for the future which also involve:

Nanotechnology

This is dangerous. I am expecting anti-AI wing to be growing in the future. Ending in a ban of artificial intelligence.
With an AI capable PC for $1000, I doubt you will be able to stop the progress. i.e. lil'Jimmy is playing with his new his new toy "HAL version 8999.5.2001" he got for his birthday, he's down in the basement with it right now.
That kind of access creates some serious enforcement problems.

Have you read "Aldous Huxley's Brave New World"? You would have to change society to something like that. Which, after reading the book, it looks like we are heading that direction now.
