I love cacti. Beautiful amazingly clever plants that can grow and thrive in dry climates, where most plants won't survive. They need those spikes for protection from predators (my phone originally changed this word to pretenders and I am adding it again in parenthesis because it fits the analogy of the people who pretend to love but only want something from you) so I see this as the woman hugging it is a predator (pretender) and the cacti (or prickly person) is very wise to protect itself. 
Love and interest went to the field one day and more could interest than the love he had. It's a phrase that they use a lot in my community to express what you say in the post, to be with someone for wanting something from that person. However, I think we all want something from the other, from love to the material. There is always a mutual interest between two lovers but the performance of each one will turn us into a cactus or a suitor. What matters is that it becomes true love as the only interest.
