How to be a Smart Buyer of Chicken in the Market

Most people eat over 50 pounds of chicken yearly, using it for a variety of mouth-watering delicacies. However, a lot of these chicken sold have already been tampered with and do not come “all-natural” or “hormone-free” like the packages promise. Most often we buy chickens from the supermarket or store without being aware of exactly what we are getting. People who consume them end up taking in high levels of arsenic and other harmful compounds that are not healthy to the system.

So when shopping, here are some tips you should arm yourself with to help you become a smart buyer of chicken:

Check for the USDA Organic Seal
This seal, when placed on a food package, certifies it as being up to 95% organic. It also lists the ingredients on the package, which gives you a clear idea of how your chicken was raised and packaged. With this seal, you are fully certain your chicken was raised on organic feeds and is free from all forms of synthetic products.

Check for Chicken that Hasn’t Been Water-Pumped
Most chickens get pumped with a saline solution as most stores believe this makes for a better flavor. What this does is that it falsely increases the size of the chicken, which means you would be paying more for lesser quantity chicken.

Check for Chicken that is Hormone-Free
You should also go for chicken that is produced using little or no hormone whatsoever. Again, you can tell this by checking for the USDA seal on the package.

Chicken thighs have a higher deposit of irons and zinc when compared to the more frequently bought chicken breast. Bone-in chicken breast are also more nutritious that boneless ones so you might want to opt for them instead.
