Song of the Day Bach Brandenburg 6, 3rd movement (Freiburg Baroque)

in #recordpool6 years ago

This is my submssion for @recordpool, Song of the Day.

The 6th (and last) of the Brandenburg concerti by JS Bach is my favourite of the Brandenburg concerti. Written for two solo violas, two viola da gambas, one cello, violone and continuo, it is a superb Bassy alto sound. A warm and sonorous tone with no treble instruments.

It is often said that this concerto represents the triumph of the newer brilliant violin family over the older consort instruments of the older gamba family. Where even two of the lowliest (violas) of the violin family are given the solo parts over the gamba's, which are relegated to background accompanying roles.

This particular movement is always a joy to play, it is just an simple expression of happiness and ease of technique!

You describe the sounds of the instruments so well. It's like their voices are different flavours to be taken in by the discerning ear. ;)

Thanks! It is always something that I like to keep in mind when programming a concert as well. It is always nice to have a diverse and changing palette of instrumental timbres for the audience to hear.
